I came to the sport of rowing in October 2014, at the age of 37. I’d always enjoyed competitive sport and had achieved a good level of success in football, cricket and softball, but rowing instantly took hold of me like nothing else before. I loved being on the water and I loved to race, but equally I loved the training – the long hours on the ergo and in the gym – 6 days per week, 9 months each year. Also I discovered that I was really rather good at it.

I still have unfulfilled goals on the water (a Henley Semi-Final in 2017 the pinnacle of my career in the boat to date), but it is on the indoor rowing machine (a.k.a. the ergo) that I have my most noteworthy achievements. In 2016 I set an age group British distance record for the sixty minute time trial, and in December won a gold medal in my category at the British Rowing Indoor Championships representing my two clubs, Auriol Kensington RC and Sub7 IRC. At the same event in 2017 I took the silver medal, but will return in 2018 to try and reclaim my crown.

I realised these achievements while holding down a full time job in technology finance during a career spanning the best part of twenty years. However, I was increasingly feeling at odds with that career. Training was now my inspiration, racing my motivation. I wanted to invest much more of my time and energy into pursuing my own personal goals, while inspiring others by sharing my experience, knowledge and passion for the sport in order to help them achieve theirs.

I qualified as a personal trainer in the Summer of 2017 and set forth on a rewarding new career, determined to pass on to my clients a broad and diverse training experience drawn from a sport that has already given me so much.
